The ultimate goal is that employees will move on to good paying jobs in the community, but in that process HopeWorks loses the staff and the relationships that customers come to trust. Not only must they provide the same level of service at a similar price, but must do it while in a constant cycle of training new employees. The current floor plan will be reconfigured to add the new cafe, patrons will have access to the cafe via ReNewWorks showroom as well as a private entrance on the south side of the building.Ī social enterprise business has a distinct challenge when it comes to remaining competitive with other profit-driven businesses in the area. ReNewWorks is located at street level in HopeWorks Station, has good visibility, is on a major bus line and just two blocks from the Everett Transit Station. Of the three existing social enterprise businesses, ReNewWorks Home and Decor is the most visible. Phase II will include an adjacent structure with 100 housing units, a parking garage, training facilities, offices and additional social enterprise businesses. Phase I involved renovation and remodeling of the existing structure to house the current HopeWorks businesses and a future espresso cafe. The Broadway property, known as HopeWorks Station, is being developed in phases. The third and most recent addition to the social enterprise family, ReNewWorks Home and Décor, opened in September of 2013 in its current location at 3331 Broadway in Everett. The second business, WaterWorks Irrigation Services a division of GroundWorks, was established in April 2012 was born out of a similar need (Davis, 2015). It made more sense to train and pay their own employees rather than hire the work out to other landscapers. GroundWorks developed out of a very real need for Housing Hope to manage the landscaping needs of their many properties. Social enterprise companies are on the rise and can operate as a nonprofit or for-profit business or a combination of both (Bramson, 2013).Įstablished in January 2011, GroundWorks Landscaping was as the first of Housing Hope’s social enterprise businesses. The term social enterprise defines a business with a mission to improve its community. By providing accessible internships, education, job training and employment opportunities for low-income and homeless youth and adults in Snohomish County, Housing Hope would take another giant step in promoting self-sufficiency.
